Retrospective Study of Elderly Suicide Visited Emergency Center

Abstract
Purpose: This study was designed to investigate suicide trends in the elderly.

This study was retrospective analysis. Data were collected from the records of which suicide attempters aged 65 and older visited at A university hospital emergency center over a period of 3 years March, 2004- February, 2006.

Result: It was identified 129 suicide attempters. Of these, twenty seven completed suicide. The gender ratio was similar. The most frequent suicide method involved self-poisoning, followed by hanging, jumping & cutting and drowning. For poisoning method, pharmaceutics were used in 65.9% and non-pharmaceutics were used in 37.9%. fifty three expressed suicide intents before the act. The major cause of the attempt was physical illness & chronic pain. Seventeen of sample had a history of previous suicide attempts. Nineteen of male subjects completed suicide compared with eighteen of female subjects. Completed suicide were related with determined suicide and poisoning substances. Seventeen attempted suicide were survived but twenty completed suicides had not previous suicide history. For male subjects, determined methods were used in 73.3% and psychiatric history was related with suicide causes.

Conclusion: With this finding of study, it may have practical value in developing nursing intervention strategy and open avenues for prevention.
